What started out as backyard races on a farm in Kleinburg, Ontario has grown into one of the most exciting equine sports in all of Canada.
 
Ajax Downs (formerly Picov Downs) celebrates 50 years of Quarter Horse Racing in 2019 and this Sunday, July 14, everyone is invited to a trackside party at the popular Ontario track. 
 
Headlined by a nine-race card that includes the $59,300 Ontario-Bred Futurity, featuring the 2-year-old stars of the future, Ajax Downs will host its first Wiener Dog Races plus an appearance by the popular group Two for the Show, cash giveaways, anniversary T-shirts and many events for all ages.
 
Quarter Horse racing has grown into an important industry for the Durham region and some of the early personalities of the sport, including trainers Les Baker, Joe Tavares, Bob Broadstock and Barry Wood plus jockeys Brian Bell, Ed Walton and Tony Phillips will be racing horses on Sunday.
 
The founding family of Quarter Horse racing at Ajax Downs, the Picovs (Alex Picov introduced Quarter Horse Racing with donated land in 1969, will be represented by several starters on Sunday including Hanover Hill Chalsee in the Futurity.
 
First race post time Sunday is 12:50 p.m., arrive early to experience all of the day's exciting events!
