Drama in the Ontario Bred Derby Trials at Ajax Downs
The fillies beat the boys in two Trials for the June 16, $50,000 ONTARIO BRED DERBY at Ajax Downs on Sunday but there were some anxious moments in both 300-yard dashes.

On a sunny and breezy Fan Appreciation Day at Ajax Downs, a very strong headwind met the Quarter Horses in the afternoon's races.

FIVE BAR FANDANGO won the the first Trial and recorded the fastest time of the two Derby preps despite drifting out late in the race under jockey Tony Phillips. Her time was :15.760. The 3-year-old filly is unbeaten this year in two starts and is a half sister to star Had to Be Ivory, who won last week's Picov Maturity.
Five Bar Fandango held off a charging Shake It Twice, also a filly. The winner is owned by Carol and Jaime Robertson and trained by Bryn Robertson.

In the second Trial, Teller a Secret was the unofficial winner but this lightly raced filly drifted out and caused interference and was disqualified and placed third. Elevated to first was SHE'S SIZZLING, owned and bred by Erik and Joyce Lehtinen of Uxbridge and ridden by Ramiro Castillo.
The second Trial was clocked in :16.440.

Jockey CORY SPATARO won three races on the day and the fans in turn won a coupon for a free burger from MCCOY BURGER CO., which offers the prize to fans for the first rider to win two races in an afternoon.

Quarter Horse racing at Ajax Downs is heating up in this, its 50th Anniversary Season and continues each Sunday with a post time of 12;55 p.m. The Anniversary special, the '10 Days of Winning Contest' continues June 9 with those in attendance up for a chance to win one of four $50 betting vouchers.
